Refusing “Little,” the name of his family’s slave master, had me contemplating my then last name “Antoine.” This led me on a path of Indigenous self-discovery and cultural reclamation. I had also learned that re-naming a person or place is a powerful tool in the colonial subjugation of the people and places of North America.
