Yellowknife style isn’t the high fashion of larger urban centres. Instead, it’s a unique mix of fashion and function that lets us brave the elements while showcasing our unique personalities during long, dark winters.
I’m going out on a regular basis, looking for Yellowknifers rockin’ winter wear in their own way. This installment’s about that YK winter staple: the parka.
Moon Wei | Coming from Shanghai, Moon had been in town for three days when we met up. This is a brand new parka, which she just bought. The logo on the sleeve says “Riders of the Storm.” Thoughts on Yellowknife? “It’s so cold,” she said, adding “beauty.”
Dianne Janong | When Dianne’s daughter left the North, she gave her this parka. Describing it as a “granny style with the sleeves” she also bought it at the old Polar Parkas.
Charlotte Henry | “Everyone else wears black and this colour makes me happy, so why not be a bright spot in the winter?” says Charlotte of her parka’s great colour. She’s had the jacket about a year, and you can listen to the clip below to find out how she got it.

Fraser “Bear” Trennert: Big Bear’s been wearing his bandana for several years. He bought it for $1.98 and someone once offered him $300 for it, which he refused. While it represents Japanese culture, he says it also reminds him of a bench his dad made in Tuk where he used to watch the sun rise and set.
Donna Woodland | Her hat was made by a teacher colleague when she lived in B.C. She says her three kids also each have one. “Warm and fun,” are how she describes it.
Jessica Mandeville | From Hay River, Jessica picked up this fuzzy wonder at the dollar store. Just passing through on her way back from Dechinta, she says it’s wolf-like and warm.
