Parity has long been a trademark of the NFL, and this season is no different. Already halfway through the season, there’s no clear-cut Super Bowl favourite, most division titles are still tightly contested, and previous powerhouses like Seattle, San Francisco and Carolina are all struggling.
Here’s a look at the most outstanding players to date, the league’s biggest surprises and disappointments, and the current standings.
Midseason MVP Candidates
Demarco Murray – Dallas Cowboys
Murray has been an absolute beast this season, amassing at least 100 yards in eight of his first nine games this season. Running behind a rejuvenated Dallas offensive line, he’s averaging 5.0 yards a carry and leads the NFL’s second leading rusher, Arian Foster, by more than 200 yards.
Peyton Manning – Denver Broncos
It’s been much of the same this year for Peyton and the Broncos. Playing some of his best football at age 38, Manning has five games this season with at least three TD passes, a 67.3 completion percentage, and is on pace for his third season with over 48 TDs.
Tom Brady – New England Patriots
After a rather disappointing start to the season, capped off by a 41-14 drubbing at the hands of the Chiefs in Week 4, Brady has been brilliant. Leading his team to five straight victories, throwing 18 touchdowns and only one interception during that stretch.
Biggest Surprise
Dallas Cowboys
Most football fans have learned to expect very little from Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys. The Cowboys have not made the playoffs since 2009 and quarterback Tony Romo has a reputation of wilting late in games. But at 6-3 this year, a playoff berth appears likely. Dallas’s defense has wildly exceeded expectations, Demarco Murray is healthy and running amok, and Romo is making big plays when needed.
Biggest Letdown
Atlanta Falcons
After an extremely disappointing 2013-2104 campaign, plagued by injuries and inconsistent quarterback play, all signs pointed to a bounce back year for the dirty birds. That simply has not been the case. The Falcons have failed to establish a running game, Matt Ryan has looked mediocre, and at 2-6 the Falcons seem destined for another high pick in next year’s draft.
